The Passwordless Paradox

No matter how you slice it, passwords present usability and security problems. They are an accepted inconvenience that we’ve become numb to, and they have two major shortcomings:

Passwords Aren’t User Friendly

The average person has 100+ passwords1, and that number will only continue to increase. As employees and customers have way more passwords to keep track of than ever before, their frustration will also only continue to grow. While short and simple passwords are easy to remember, they are weak and easy to hack. Organizations have forced users to create long and complex passwords in the name of security. But all this has done is make users more frustrated while also increasing the likelihood that they will reuse the same passwords across multiple websites.

Passwords Aren’t Secure

Why? 70% of people use the same usernames and passwords across various sites, which presents an easy target for criminals. If credentials are compromised through phishing or brute force attacks, hackers may try to reuse those same username and password combinations elsewhere. With over 15 billion compromised credentials in circulation on dark web forums, it’s no wonder 80% of breaches involve brute force attacks or the use of lost or stolen credentials.
